As Oregon navigates another active wildfire season, public employers must protect employees from both wildfire smoke exposure and excessive heat while maintaining essential public services.
Oregon OSHA Wildfire Smoke Protection Requirements
The wildfire smoke rules (ORS 437-002-1081 and 437-004-9791) apply when PM2.5 reaches 35.5 µg/m3 (AQI 101) or higher.
Key Wildfire Smoke Requirements
Monitor air quality.

Maintain two-way communication.
Implement exposure controls such as relocation, schedule changes, and reduced strenuous work.
Provide NIOSH-approved N95 respirators for voluntary use at AQI 101 or higher.
Exemptions and Partial Exemptions
Exemptions include enclosed filtered-air buildings, certain vehicles, telework, and suspended operations. Partial exemptions apply to emergency operations, wildland firefighting, and limited intermittent exposure.

Heat illness prevention (ORS 437-002-0156) measures begin at a heat index of 80°F and increase at 90°F or above.
